On Thursday, April 15th, my favorite TV show, Supernatural, currently in its 5th season, will air its 100th episode. This is special for many reasons, but most of all because it was not that long ago we fans did not even think we’d get a 3rd season. Thankfully, we are a very passionate bunch and we’ve promoted it like crazy!
As the show reaches this milestone, I wanted to look back on my favorite memories of a fan. It all began on September 13, 2005. Here are some major stand outs for me from the past four and 1/2 years.
Favorite Memory #1 – My husband making me watch the pilot.
Rich convinced me that Supernatural was going to be worth my time. He had read about it in the Detroit Free Press and was stoked. I was less than enthused. I had never had any interest in sci-fi / fantasy before, but gave in and said I’d watch the pilot with him. After all, I trust Rich’s instinct. He has great taste in music, movies and TV. It’s a good thing I did, because I was immediately hooked. The Supernatural pilot is without a doubt the most compelling television pilot I’ve ever watched.
Favorite Memory #2 – Seeing Jensen Ackles on The Jimmy Kimmel Show
So another funny story about Rich and I is one where I won him over, instead of the other way around (like with the pilot). I convinced him we should go to LA for the taping of Jimmy Kimmel because one of the stars of Supernatural was going to be interviewed. Rich hemmed and hawed for a bit, but since we did not get to celebrate Valentine’s Day that year, he gave in! But we didn’t just get to see Jensen Ackles on Jimmy Kimmel. While we were there, we saw my cousin and his wife and we did some sightseeing in Hollywood, Santa Monica and Malibu. It was a fabulous trip!
Favorite Memory #3 – My First Convention
Most Supernatural fans will say their first convention is special to them. But it’s not only because we had the opportunity to meet our favorit actors (and feel a bit starstruck), but we created many girl bonding memories with our fan buddies. Many of these buddies will probably (hopefully) be friends for life.
Favorite Memory #4 – “Eyecon” in Orlando
My second convention was special because I had the opportunity to meet fellow fans Erin, Gaby, Lisa and Hanako for the first time. It was also unique because it truly was an intimate fan experience. Fans got to go to happy hour and play Guitar Hero with the stars…and even play a little game of truth or dare we dubbed “The Chair of Truth.” It was incredible! We also had the exclusive opportunity of seeing a special screening of Ten Inch Hero starring Jensen Ackles.
Favorite Memory #5 – Starting http://www.SupportSupernatural.com
Before season two ended, Supernatural fans were scared the show would not continue. Ratings were not the best, even for a smaller network like the then new, CW. So Heather and I created a website to promote the show. It was originally called “Save Supernatural” and once the show did get renewed, we changed the name to “Support Supernatural” and three years later, we’re still having a great time promoting the show (and raising money for wonderful charities as well)!
Favorite Memory #6 – “Salute to Supernatural,” Chicago, November 2008
Every convention has cool moments. At this convention, I had the pleasure of meeting Alice, Dakota, Sarah and Ania for the first time. We also had the opportunity to see singer/songwriter Steve Carlson rock the karaoke party with a couple of kick ass tunes! And how sweet is our friend Kaye? Well, she had a special birthday cake made for Heather, Mel and me for our birthdays. Sam and Dean Winchester were on the cake! Can you say ‘Yum?’
Favorite Memory #7 – Getting Kathy and Sandy into Supernatural
Convincing my BFF (and her hubby) to check out Supernatural was like pulling teeth. She was busy with her career and school. And then one day, she started to tell me about how much she loved watching The X Files. I remember nearly losing it on the phone. I told her that if she loved that show, she HAD to check out Supernatural. I also asked her why she had not told me sooner that she loved The X Files. Her response, “Because I knew you’d tell me I’d love Supernatural!” (LOL!) What I came to find out is that she did want to check the show out, but had not had time before that moment. She finally agreed to watch the pilot with me. I knew that was all it would take and I was right! Victory!
Favorite Memory #8 – Yet Another “Salute to Supernatural” – This one in New Jersey
This was the convention where we got to meet Misha Collins for the first time! Enough said. 🙂 Wait, I should add that I met the lovely Lauren and Becky and I LOVED how incredibly intimate this convention ended up being. OK, moving on…
Favorite Memory #9 – Vancouver!
If you have not been to Vancouver, you must go! What an amazing city. It was a whirlwind trip (really just a long weekend), but it was awesome. It is the best of all worlds – big, clean, safe city, next to the ocean and the mountains. This convention was also a favorite memory because I had a VIP pass and got to spend extra time with the stars. Having a 10-minute convention with Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and nine other fans will always be a stand out for me. Oh, and I ran into Jared and Jensen’s girlfriends, Genevieve and Daneel. My first impression of them is that Jensen and Jared were just as lucky as these girls. They struck me as very down-to-earth and I made a point to tell the boys that!
Favorite Memory #10 – One More Convention!
My favorite memory from this convention was the fact that it felt like a reunion! And being able to watch the one episode devoted to a fan convention that aired the night before this convention was priceless!
Favorite Memory #11 – Working with A Dog’s Life Rescue
For over a year now, Heather and I have worked closely with a charity endorsed by Jared Padalecki. Our relationship with them began when Jared’s publicist asked us coordinate a fan fundraiser for them. We of course said yes and have been fundraising for them ever since. More importantly, these women have become our friends and we are honored to be able to continue to help them with publicity and fundraising.
Favorite Memory #12 – Having http://www.SupportSupernatural.com be mentioned in Supernatural Magazine
I cannot even begin to describe that an honor this is. And with this, I’m done for now. I’m sure I’ll have many more memories to come!
So, what is YOUR favorite Supernatural memory?
