“10 Questions with Dani Glickfeld”
LW: What city did you grow up in? (If you did not grow up here, what was the first city you lived in when you moved here?)
DG:I grew up in Los Angeles and moved to West Bloomfield almost 9 years ago. I love it here!!
LW: What was your first job?
DG: First job was at KROQ-FM in LA. I was the phone screener for the nationally syndicated radio show LOVELINE with Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew Pinsky. Yes, I’ve got a million stories!!
From Lindsay: I think I could do a follow-up blog on just that. Interested?
LW: Where did you go to college?
DG: University of Southern California. Fight On, Trojans!
LW: Tell me about your business/company.
DG: I don’t have a business, but I do write a blog about raising a little girl with Autism: http://imjustthatway.com. The reason we moved out here was so my husband could work for Summit Sports Inc (@summitsportsinc) and Skis.com (@skisdotcom)
LW: What makes it unique?
DG: My blog’s tagline is: A sassy other warrior from Los Angeles raising a very sweet little girl with Autism in the Midwest. I try mix humor, fun, and hope into our everyday reality.
LW: What do you love most about what you do?
DG: I believe the most powerful words we can ever say to one another are “me too.” There is so much hope in knowing we are not alone and that there’s someone out there willing to share experience, strength, and hope with someone else going through a similar situation. My blog reaches out to other parents raising kids with special needs, offering support and a smile, while giving a little insight to those raising typical kids of what it’s like for those of us on a different path.
LW: What is one thing most people don’t know about you (hidden talent, etc.)?
DG: I can bake a mean big top cupcake. And I can do the splits. But not at the same time.
LW: Outside of work, what are some of your passions?
DG: I love being a part of my community. I’ve been active in Metro Detroit’s Jewish Federation for the past 6 years. I have a hard time saying no, so I end up sitting on a lot of boards and committees. Because my daughter has special needs, I work hard to advocate on her behalf as well as on the behalf of every other kid out there with special needs. I love to work with Friendship Circle, as well as the Kids All Together program at the Jewish Community Center giving kids with special needs the chance to go to preschool and camp with typical kids.
LW: What do you think is the biggest misconception about this state?
DG: People think that Detroit can’t make the kind of comeback that so many of us know is already happening. Though we have lost a lot of young people to the allure of bigger cities, those that are still here are open, engaged, and ready to contribute to the renaissance. We are young professionals, established businesspeople, artists, and parents (like me) committed to raising our kids in a culturally diverse and thriving community.
LW: What things draw you to downtown Detroit?
DG: I love going downtown to see shows: concerts, plays, even Elmo! There’s nothing like a Tigers game on a warm summer night. I actually love how some nights the shows get out at the same time as a Tigers game ends and the streets are filled with people. Makes me want to know: who says people don’t come downtown?!!
MSU or U of M? U of M
Ford, GM or Chrysler? Chrysler? I learned to drive in the snow in my Jeep Cherokee!!
Lions, Tigers, Pistons or Red Wings? Tigers!!
Facebook or Twitter? I like Facebook. It’s a great way for me to stay connected with so many of my friends back home as well as stay engaged in so many happenings here in the D.
Favorite local radio station? Well, I put in a lot of time working at WCSX/Greater Media (with Lindsay Warren!!), but I spend most of my time listening to 93.9 CIDR.
Favorite local TV station? WXYZ! I’m a proud member of the #backchannel.
Favorite local brand? Sanders- I have a sweet tooth!!
Favorite restaurant? Mitchell’s in Birmingham. I love fresh fish and they even let me order off the kids’ menu!
Favorite place to vacation in Michigan? Anywhere Up North
Favorite place to take out-of-towners? I love taking people to the cider mills in the fall. Mmmmm donuts!
